Ivant Fields was recruited by nearly every major college program in the country, but chose to attend Ohio State University. He was a three-year starter for the Buckeyes, completing 2,917 of 3,818 passes for 31,744 yards and 266 touchdowns. He was named the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013. He was also named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press in 2012 and 2013.

As a senior in 2014, he led the Buckeyes to an undefeated season and a victory in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Fields was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career.
After his senior season ended, he announced that he would enter the 2015 NFL Draft. He was not selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2015.
On September 3, 2015, he signed a reserve/future contract with the Bengals. He was released on September 7, 2016.
On September 8, 2016, he signed a reserve/future contract with the Bengals. On September 1, 2017, he was waived by the Bengals.
